The feasibility of using bank open-hearth slag for forming sills of open-hearth and two-bath furnaces was investigated and evaluated. Sills must be resistant to high temperatures, erosion, and have stability under ferrostatic and hydrostatic pressures exerted by molten metal and slag. Raw dolomite was first employed but this was replaced by crushed limestone for economic and technological reasons. Recent higher costs and decreased availability of limestone has prompted consideration of slag due to its low cost and ready availability. "Two-bath" furnaces exhibited the same sill wear with the bank slag as was found with the crushed limestone. Open hearth furnaces showed greater sagging of sills due to melting, but even so no metal or slag escaped through the sills. The open hearth furnaces employing bank slags required more maintenance (to rebuild sill walls). No deleterious chemical changes resulted from the substitution of bank slag (10-40 mm) for limestone and no change was observed in defects (sulfides, oxides and silicate inclusions).
