A commercial AA 8023 aluminum alloy was decomposed in different conditions to study the kinetics and morphological aspects of the phase transformation. The nominal composition by weight percent of the as-received material was 1.40 pct Fe, 0.43 pct Mn, 0.15 pct Si, and 0.2 pct other. It was found that the microstructural evolution of the AA 8023 aluminum alloy was strongly conditioned by the decomposition temperature. After casting, this alloy remained in metastable condition. During the heat treatments, only an AlFe intermediate phase is produced. The equilibrium phases such as Al6Mn and FeAl3 are formed in a time no less than 24 hours. A double kinetics is observed in this alloy system. At lower temperatures (T < 420 C), the diffusion is weak and inefficient to modify the as-cast dendritic structure. At higher temperatures (T > 420 C), where the diffusional effects are more intensive, the microsegregation increases and the core nucleated on the interdendritic zones coarsens to form globular particles after a long time interval.
