  • A high cost reduction potential is noted in crystalline thin film Si solar cells on low cost substrates. In production, the conversion efficiency of solar cells manufactured from mono- or multicrystalline silicon has to be improved and production costs have to be lowered. The efficiency is limited by optical and electrical energy losses. Various structures have been developed to minimize these losses. Inverted pyramid structures on the surface of the cell, performed by anisotropic etching, allow effective light trapping. The front surface is passivated with a SiO2-1ayer, which acts simultaneously as an antireflective coating. The emitter is a two step emitter. A back surface field (BSF) structure has been introduced at the rear side of the cell. An even better rear side passivation is a SiO2-layer, combined with a local BSF. The metallization of the rear side acts simultaneously as a mirror for the long wavelength light. (Author)
