• Kingston University's Polymer & Composites Consultancy (KPCC), UK, is providing a service for carrying out testing of GRP materials exposed to fuels. Tests are usually performed on laminates consisting of isophthalic polyester thermosets reinforced with chopped strand mat. Current standard test methods comprise immersion of the laminates in the relevant test liquid. A recently drafted Council of European Normalisation (CEN) standard specifies that tests of this nature should involve single-sided exposure of the laminate surface to a proposed CEN test-liquid and its vapour, followed by measurement of the flexural modulus. The post-exposure modulus value must be at least 80% of its initial value in order for the material to pass the test. Other services on offer from KPCC include testing for environmental durability, ageing, chemical resistance, permeability measurements, and testing of glass/polyester marine laminates for Lloyds' Register of Shipping approval.
