Computer simulation was used to study the spread of atom-atom collision cascades in an alloy containing precipitates of a new phase, with an atomic volume that differs from that of the matrix. The effect of the second-phase precipitates was studied by the molecular dynamics method. The calculations of the atomic collision cascades showed that in a crystal with second phase precipitates, both an increase and a decrease in the number of stable Frenkel defects, is observed. Also the cascade tends to be localized in the region between the precipitates. The decrease in the sputtering coefficient of the decomposing alloy may be attributed to screening of the chains of displacement collisions by planar coherent second phase precipitates.
