• In December 1994, under number Z-19.11-475, the Deutsches Institut fur Bautechnik (DIBt) issued the first F 90 approval for an intumescent fireproofing material. This is a step forward in the field of passive fire protection and opens new design options for architects and civil engineers. The approval applies to interior an exterior use and is valid for columns and trusses of open profiles with Hp/A9U/A) < =160 m exp 1 . Further tests early next year will allow the approval to be extended to other profile factors, beams and fireproofing durations of 120 minutes (F 120). The trade name of the product is Chartek IV and the German representative is Corrotherm, 2920 Kalmthout, Belgium. The present article explains the specific properties of the product and the test results obtained.
