• The introduction of multiprocessor systems has initiated considerable research towards producing software systems aimed at transferring ‘dusty deck’ Fortran codes to these new platforms. However, the resulting software systems remain far removed from offering friendly, portable, flexible migration environments. The Fortport project, initiated in 1991, aims to provide a range of closely related tools that will support the migration of Fortran dialects such as Fortran 77, Fortran 90 and Cray Fortran to multiprocessor systems. Development of the prototype system has highlighted a number of interesting problems of varying complexity. This paper details one of these related problems and presents two solution strategies.
