• Cracks on EDMed surfaces are of major concern. This paper discusses the nature of cracks found in the recast layer. The microstructure of the recast for a number of commonly used tools are then presented. Results are provided to illustrate the significance of the thermal conductivity of the work material on the recast layer thickness and crack density. Finally, some findings on iron, carbon steels and copper-aluminium alloys are included to help verify the findings for the tool steels.
