  • The mechanism of internal friction in martensitic transformation was studied in shape memory alloy of Cu--26.5Zn--4.8Al composition. No internal friction appears with the quenched alloy aged at room temperature during the first heating transformation cycle, even though the reverse transformation has taken place. This is suggested to be due to the absence of soft mode centers during transformation. On successive cycles, the internal friction peaks reached maximum intensities with stabilized reproducible curves where Delorme--Dejonghe theory is applicable. The theory is modified at low frequency to take into account the difference between the average modulus of the bulk and localized areas where the transformation has taken place. The quenched-in vacancies influence soft mode phenomenon which appears during the cooling cycle. Graphs. 13 ref.--B.C.
