• Cutting tools made of ceramic, cBN, and diamond have the potential for high-speed finish machining, and for high-removal-rate machining of difficult-to-machine materials. However, there is a problem: these hard materials are brittle. Recently, new and improved strengthening techniques have been successfully developed for these hard materials. Consequently, these materials are broadening the cutting applications field. A brief overview of the advances in these hard materials for cutting tips is presented. Cutting of cast iron, steels, nickel base superalloys, aluminum base alloys (e.g. Al-Si alloy) is discussed.
