  • Two dynamic programming models for generating reservoir operating rules are described. In the deterministic model the solution was obtained by cycling a deterministic dynamic program, a regression analysis and a simulation. The stochastic model described streamflow with a discrete, lag-one Markov process. The rules generated by each model were applied to real-time reservoir operation simulation models for 12 single reservoir monthly operation test cases at 3 hydrologically different sites. The stochastic model performed better for small reservoirs with a capacity of 20 per cent mean annual flow but the rules generated by the deterministic model were more effective for the medium to very large reservoirs (capacity 50 to 170 per cent mean annual flow).
