  • The behavior of nitrogen absorption into gas atomized high speed tool steel powders has been studied by using a thermo-balance in N sub 2 atmosphere at 950 to 1195 deg C. As a result it has become clear that the absorbed nitrogen content of the high speed tool steel powders are proportional to the vanadium content of the powders and the nitrogen absorbed exists as vanadium carbonitrides in the powders. Furthermore, the nitrogen content of the powder does not depend on particle size, but on nitriding temperature. The saturated nitrogen content is higher at lower temperatures (950 deg C). Nitrogen absorption rate into the powders is faster the finer the particle size and higher the nitriding temperature. It was discovered that the rate-determining step of nitrogen absorption into the powders is the nitrogen molecule dissociation to atomic nitrogen on the particle surface. 4 ref.--AA
