A method for the determination of total residual chlorine in water is described. Potassium iodide was added on-site, followed by activated carbon filtration to collect iodine generated by the oxidation. Laboratory X-ray fluorescence spectrometry was performed. The total residual chlorine detection limit was 40 ug per litre with a within-batch relative standard deviation of 23 per cent at 0.16 mg per litre. The method took less than 10 min per sample.
