  • The purpose of this study was to understand the learners' experience in corporate engineering virtual synchronous technical training. A literature review revealed that there was a gap for this topic, population, and this research design and methodology. The research previously conducted was predominantly either quantitative or mixed design. The population for much of the research was conducted in institutes of higher learning. There was very little literature focusing on corporate engineering and virtual synchronous technical training. The research design for this study was qualitative, and the methodology is the generic qualitative inquiry. This design and methodology were selected to allow for the rich and subjective expressions from participants. Participants were interviewed using open-ended questions including a guiding interview question followed by additional questions organically determined by the researcher during the interview. There were eight participants for this study that were recruited through a community portal. They were then interviewed to determine qualification based on the determined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Interviews were recorded and transcribed. The data collected was categorized, clustered, and synthesized to determine over-reaching themes. Four themes emerged from the data analysis: (a) environmental impacts, (b) instructor experience in modality, (c) learner overall satisfaction, and (d) virtual synchronous course instructional design. The study was limited by the researcher's lack of expertise in conducting research and by the limitations set with the inclusion and exclusion criteria for the participants. Findings support previous literature with participants' comments referencing a disassociation with other learners, the importance of instructional design in the virtual modality, emphasis on a requirement for stable technology and tools during training, and a work culture that does not consistently support dedicated time for training though it is required for job performance. Recommendations for future research include to research the work culture for management support of continuing education in the workplace, to conduct a repeated study that includes other forms of virtual learning, and to conduct a repeated study that broadens the inclusion and exclusion criteria to include globalized participation.
