The primary metal coming from Al smelters has numerous metallic and nonmetallic impurities. The quantity of impurities and inclusions depend on the impurities found in the raw materials and those that are acquired in the production process. To study the changes occurring in the impurity content of primary Al metal during liquid metal treatment like remelting, holding and salt fluxing, a series of highly accurate electrical and mechanical tests has been conducted. The application of spark source mass spectrometry has been justified for the determination of the impurities. During remelting, anions (fluorine, Cl, oxygen, phosphorus, hydrogen) and alkali and alkaline earth metalimpurities (Na, Ca) decrease substantially. Further decrease in the concentration of impurities (H, Na, Li, Ba, Ca, Mg) was observed on holding. In the case of boronized metal boron, Ti and vanadium content also decrease on holding. The min. concentrations of impurities (H, Li, Na, Ca and Mg) have been found in the metal sample treated with Aluflux-H followed by holding. The electrical conductivity of boronized metal is better although Fe, Si and Mn contents are higher than those in unboronized metal. It has been concluded that most effective metal cleaning can be achieved with application of active salt treatment followed by holding.17 refs.--AA
