• Wang et al focuses on teaching an intuitive derivation of the clinical alveolar equations, the mass balance as a fundamental physiological principle. The authors demonstrate how they teach the derivations and highlight how they link applications of these equations to clinical practice. While the clinical examples provided often center on a critically ill patient, they believe the foundational principles discussed can and should be used to guide clinical decision making outside of the intensive care unit. This approach was presented as an optional learning supplement to first-year medical students at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, which follows an organ system-based curriculum, as a resource for the pulmonary module in February 2019.
