• According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of reported cases has steadily risen since 2016.5 Thirty-one states reported new cases during the period from January to December 5, 2019, and the number of cases jumped to 1276 from 375 in 2018.5 It is likely that the true number is even larger, as not all states provide reports. In the cohort of American children born in the 2 decades between 1994 and 2013, among those who were fully vaccinated while young, an estimated >700,000 deaths and >20 million hospitalizations will have been prevented during their lifetimes.9 Because of the increase in measles cases in the United States, in 1993, the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act established the Vaccines for Children program to ensure that a lack of money would no longer be an impediment to vaccination in eligible children.10,11 Another US program, the National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act of 1986, was intended to ensure the safety of vaccines.
