  • Catastrophe struck in February 1854, when Schumann suffered a violent attack of mania, attempted suicide, and on 4 March was taken to a private asylum near Bonn. What of the first versions of Brahms's Piano Trio op.8 and the C minor Piano Quartet, in which Sams identifies the 'Clara theme' which 'spells' Clara - that is, 'C-(H)-A-(B)-A? The Adagio opens with the woodwinds softly playing a descending harmonic scale in thirds, answered in counterpoint by the strings, and followed in due course by the piano, repeating the opening theme and extending it. Clara was deeply offended to learn that Brahms had had the early version published; and Brahms was equally offended to discover that Clara had omitted from the Complete Works his suggestion of additional pieces for Schumann's Symphonic etudes.7 An exchange of anguished letters finally cleared the air, with both Brahms and Clara reaffirming their deep and loving friendship.
