  • Schaden examines Wout Berger's photobook Poisoned Landscape. Polluted Sites and Landscapes in the Netherlands. The photobook was published by the Fragment Uitgeverij in Amsterdam in the summer of 1992. The publication is a narrow, horizontal brochure with a mere 72 pages and measures 27 x 34 cm. It contains 108 color photographs, as well as texts by Berger, Lucas Reijnders and Rob Sijmons in two languages. The book title was included in the Het Nederlands Fotoboek anthology in the year 2012. In it, Frits Gierstberg, one of the two editors, paid tribute to Berger's first photobook as a "sensational publication" that, with its playful ambivalences, circumvented the customary expectations and categories of documentary photography: "Poisoned Landscape is about soil pollution in the Netherlands, with the author playing a game, both humorous and deadly serious, with the notions that documentary photography tell the truth."
