• Once again, water has reared its head in the debate about housing growth in the South East. A lack of it could provide yet another problem for the sustainable communities plan, warned the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM). The CIWEM is urging the government to rethink its plans for housing expansion in the South East in view of the pressure on water supplies. It is also calling for a raft of legislative measures -- the adoption of sustainable planning principles, greater recognition that water is a scarce resource in parts of the UK and policy instruments to promote efficiency.
