• "On Oct. 3, 1993, the United States Task Force Ranger executed a raid into General Mohamad Farah Aidid's stronghold near the Olympic Hotel in Mogadishu, Somalia, seeking to capture two of Aidid's key lieutenants. Although the task force captured 24 Aidid supporters, Somali clansmen shot down two MH-60L Black Hawk helicopters using rocket-propelled grenades, or RPGs. With the downing of the first MH-60L, TF Ranger's mission changed from capturing Aidid's supporters to safeguarding and recovering American casualties...This article will examine the actions of TF Ranger within a theory of special operations in the hope that it will assist other special-operations Soldiers in planning and executing direct-action operations."
