BATTLE STUDIES: ANCIENT AND MODERN BATTLE, written by Colonel Charles Ardant du Picq, a nineteenth century French soldier, is the basis for many of the U.S. military's theories on the impact of human characteristics on the outcome of war. The major principles of this book, and their relevance today, are discussed. Du Picq's studies of fear, technology and battle stress are explained. The actions of Chief Warrant Officer Michael Durant, captured and tortured by Somalis in 1993, are examined in relationship to du Picq's theories.
