Curated by Tang Xin, "China Landscape" took as its starting point the Yan'an Forum on Literature and Art, held in May 1942, at which Mao Zedong gave two speeches that later became the foundation for the cultural policy of the Chinese Communist Party when it came to power in 1949. The works on the exhibition's second floor were introduced with the words: "Arguably, the visual content of all the art created of the People's Republic of China was centered on this new national narrative and aimed to inspire popular acceptance, approval and even a form of faith." Cynics and skeptics might say the entire exhibition could be construed as meta-level propaganda, deconstructing the obvious symbolic realms of historical art to create a view of Chinese artists' sophistication and political awareness.
