• An interview with documentary filmmaker Melissa Haizlip is presented. Haizlip said that I wanted to tell the story of Black excellence. This is such a unique story and a pivotal moment on the heels of the Civil Rights Movement. It tells the story of our culture, of our history, of music, and art, and of the story of Black people, for the people, by the people. This show was created at a pivotal moment in 1968. [It was] at a moment of importance for Black people to emerge and rewrite the narrative of who they are, emerge from the struggle and say there is so much happening in our culture. Not only was it a vehicle for African-American art, but it was a platform for political expression and a fight for social justice. It was about not only the culture, but representation. The representalion of Blacks in the country was very negative and stereotyped. The only appearance that we had was on the news.
