• Tentative arguments are drawn to suggest that portions of the earth's lower atmosphere in the course of the earth's diurnal rotation could behave in a manner analogous to the fast moving cooling spot of the lunar shadow during a solar eclipse and thereby could induce atmospheric gravity waves in that region. The implications of this phenomenon are qualitatively explored for describing some features of TID's and sporadic E in the ionosphere as have been reported elsewhere.
