September 11, 2001, is a major turning point into the future-the end of the post-Cold War era and the beginning of a new Age of Terrorism, perhaps a World War III. The horrible attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, and whatever follows as a result, will change many lives, many organizations, many industries, and many nations. As a group, futurists' response differs markedly from the flood of editorials released by the September 11 jolt. In general, they take a longer view; some see the terrorist attack as a portent of darker things to come. Some, by taking a normative view, or including a positive scenario among several possibilities, envision upside developments from this tragic event. Excerpts from essays received by the World Future Society are presented.
