  • In an interview, Nancy Hyde, CPA of Hyde & Company CPAs PC, Houston D. Smith Jr. from Decatur, GA, and Joseph W. Walloch, CPA of Walloch & Associates, talked about tax research. Hyde learned tax law and acquired her tax research skills through an excellent training program offered by the IRS. Walloch has been involved in tax research for 44 years, beginning in 1965 when he worked as an IRS agent intern while attending college. Smith said their indispensable tax research tools are recognition of potential issues/opportunities, and the ability to think like those who index tax publications. Hyde said tax season is the time to learn more about clients' future plans. They prepare projections for the upcoming year, schedule quarterly sessions and update projections when changes occur. Smith's advice for a small accounting firm is to learn to distinguish between problems and opportunities.
