We are using 2D quasi-geostrophic and semi-geostrophic frontal dynamics modeling to investigate the role of realistic vertical mixing near the Southern Ocean Polar Front, with a specific focus on the exchange between the surface layer and interior. This model finds solutions to the ageostrophic cross-frontal circulation given observed density and vertical diffusion. SeaSoar data, numerous ADCP data collected during WOCE, and limited mixing measurements are used to initialize the model and explore different forcing, diffusivity, and initial density configurations. Subsequent work will use these observations to improve the frontal dynamics model by including Richardson number dependent mixing parameterizations and a time-dependent buoyancy equation.
