  • Results from a 15-year (1990-2004) Pacific basin-scale ocean general circulation model at eddy-resolving (1/8 degree or 12.5-km) resolutions will be presented. The model is based on the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) has 40 topography-following layers in the vertical direction. After 10-year spinup forced with the climatological air-sea fluxes, this model is forced with daily air-sea fluxes derived from the NCEP reanalysis. Systematic comparisons between the model simulation and available observations (both in situ and satellite) will be described. The satellite observations include TOPEX/Poseidon altimetric sea surface height and AMSR-E microwave sea surface temperature measurements. The Pacific Ocean circulation and variability is described on the seasonal to interannual time scale. The basin-scale physical solution is then used to couple a biogeochemical- ecosystem model as well as provide boundary conditions for a regional model off the California coast. Preliminary results from the basin-scale coupled physical-biological modeling and the downscale modeling from the Pacific basin- scale to coastal ocean will be presented. Future challenge and directions on eddy-resolving ocean modeling will be discussed.
