• More than 40 years ago 10 charalean taxa were recorded in Lake Tega in the Chiba Prefecture (Kasaki 1964). Now they are believed to be extinct in the lake possibly because of the recent high eutrophication of the water (Nozaki et al. 1995). In "Red Data Book"(2000), Nitella furcata (Roxb. ex Bruzelius) Agardh var. fallosa (Morioka) Imahori is designated as one of the Japanese extinct charalean taxa. This taxon was recovered, in culture, from rewetted soil collected from the bottom of Lake Tega. More charalean taxa can be recovered from soil in the lake and these taxa can be used for the regeneration of charalean population in Lake Tega, in the future.
