  • Nittela mirabilis Nordstedt var. inokasiraensis Kasaki ex Wood is the Japanese endemic species in the Charophyceae which has been distributed widely in the spring water limits near the pond of "Inokasira park" in 1957. But other habitats of this taxon were not discovered. Furthermore the spring water area was destroyed, so this taxon was thought to be exterminated. However, after that it was rediscovered in the pond of the park named "Junsaiike-ryokuti" in 1995 in Ichikawa city, Chiba prefecture. Because of this, this taxon was stated as potential extermination fear status I in "The Red data book" (The environmental ministry, 2000). In addition, it was given category A (the most important protective living thing) in "The red data book in Chiba prefecture" issued in 1999. Because the fact that the only habitat of this taxon is in Ichikawa city, the natural environment section in the Ichikawa public office took charge of the ecological investigation simultaneously, and the office installed the research committee formed of specialists in 2000. The committee's focus is to investigate about the environment in the pond, and to examine the measures needed for protection. As a result, presently this taxon is healthy. We could verify the vegetative reproduction, however, we couldn't verify the sexual reproduction with the germination from the oospore. It will be necessary to continue to watch over the growth circumstance.
