  • When the huge volumes of rakings and clippings from the trees and lawns in Fairfield, Connecticut, became too much to handle, Fairfield found a solution in International Process Systems Inc. (IPS). The city contracted with IPS for a system that would turn residents' yard waste and the town's sewage sludge into salable compost for gardening. Richard White, supervisor of Fairfield's wastewater treatment facility, estimates that the town is saving at least $100,000 in its first year of composting. Those savings could increase by marketing the compost to local landscapers and by charging nearby companies to compost spoiled food and other organic material. The privately held IPS now gets most of its $20 million in revenues from marketing compost to nurseries and garden centers. IPS believes it could be even more profitable by selling its proprietary composting units to towns and large companies that have to dispose of significant amounts of organic waste. Selling cash-strapped towns composting systems priced at $1 million to $5 million, however, will not be easy.
