Beschreibungen/Notizen
The Dragon, a fountain from 1666-1667, is explored as an expression of the declaration of the highest, most current ideals of the "Premier Versailles." It united a famous threesome : Charles Perrault, poet, polemicist, author of fairy tales, authority in several capacities at the Batiments du Roi; his brother Claude, architect, medical doctor, natural scientist, translator of Vitruvius; and Charles Le Brun, the "premier peintre du roi," the foremost figure on the artistic stage of France. The author attempts to identify their respective shares, not only in the conception and iconography of the fountain, but also in the design. It was by all estimates an amiable partnership, and it resulted in one of the most curious and clever attractions in the garden.
