  • Smyth et al discuss the use of a case example, to reflect upon the processes of thought during the clinical decision making process used by an advanced nurse practitioner (ANP) during a consultation in the Emergency Department (ED). The dual process decision making theory identified by Croskerry [5] and Kahneman [10], identifies two main psychological processes of thought within clinical decision making as intuitive decision making also known as System 1 Thinking and analytical [6], which is slower, more deliberate methodical thinking, that involves reviewing all data collected throughout the process. Among other things, the box 1 case example highlights the numerous contextual and psychological complexities and constraints that can accompany many seemingly straightforward case presentations for the ANP in the Emergency Department. In terms of this case example, (Box 2), other biases appear to have presented during this particular patient consultation process.
