  • Above- and belowground responses of cotton and sorghum, used as model C sub(3) and C sub(4) species, respectively, to elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide and soil-water availability were measured. The study was conducted in 1999 in a field in Arizona, using both monocultures and mixtures. Carbon dioxide enrichment increased leaf area and aboveground biomass of cotton plants at harvest, but sorghum responses were not altered in monocultures, and responses to CO sub(2) were similar in both soil-water treatments. Carbon dioxide enrichment increased cotton growth similarly in monocultures and mixtures, but growth responses of sorghum to CO sub(2) enrichment were reduced in mixtures compared to monocultures. Elevated CO sub(2) did not affect combined cotton and sorghum plant leaf area and biomass production in low-density mixtures, but increased both in high-density mixtures. Root biomass was not impacted by elevated CO sub(2), but root biomass was distributed lower in the soil profile under dry than under wet conditions.
