  • Effects of deep cryogenic treatment (DCT) on the microstructure and wear properties of WC-10Co coatings were examined. Significant changes in the microstructure were observed after performing DCT. Microstructure analysis indicated that the coatings after DCT for 48h contained large volumes of ε-Co and η phases. The DCT coating exhibited a lower friction coefficient than that of the untreated coating, resulting in a better wear resistance. This improvement in the wear resistance of the WC coating could be attributed to the appearance of the η phase and the transformation of α-Co to ε-Co. •WC coatings are prepared by high velocity oxygen fuel.•Deep cryogenic treatment is used to improve WC coating's wear resistance.•The appearance of η phase and ε-Co take a positive influence on the wear resistance.
