• At baseline, participants answered 3 health questionnaires to determine asthma severity, quality of life, and health status; performed basic spirometry and had fraction of exhaled nitric oxide (Feno) measured; and had venous blood drawn for analysis of full blood counts, serum IgE levels, and serum periostin levels. Feno values were measured with a nitric oxide monitor (NIOX MINO; Aerocrine AB, Solna, Sweden), according to American Thoracic Society (ATS) guidelines.8 Serum periostin levels were determined by using the clinical trial version of the Elecsys periostin immunoassay (Roche Diagnostics, Penzbery, Germany).
