In "An Historical and Geographical Description of Formosa" (1704), George Psalmanazar describes an island called Xyphon. There was not, however, an island with such a place-name in Japan when the Description was published, and a number of English books called the island of Japan Niphon. It can be inferred from this fact that Xyphon is a neologism coined by Psalmanazar and that in all probability he invented the place-name by changing the two alphabetical letters Ni of Niphon for Xy.
