In the ultraradical journal The Axe Laid to the Root, or a Fatal Blow to Oppressors (1817) Robert Wedderburn announces that in relation to his anti-slavery agenda 'the press' is his 'engine of destruction', in which he 'must give vent' to 'prophetic inspiration and the greatness of the work' he is 'to perform'. As editor, Wedderburn invented correspondents, one of whom -- Miss Campbell, a slave-owning woman of colour in Jamaica -- controversially frees her slaves under the millenarian influence of his correspondence and Spencean thought. In the fourth number of The Axe Laid to the Root Wedderburn published an unsigned purported letter to her.
