As traditional finfish stocks decline worldwide due to overfishing and environmental change, interest in harvesting cephalopods has increased. A 1998 conference examined specific aspects of the role of cephalopods in ocean food chains, with emphasis on stock abundance, their importance as prey, and their importance as consumers. Papers presented at the conference are summarized briefly. Some implications for international and regional cephalopod fisheries are discussed, including the annual replacement of the entire standing crop (biomass) and associated lack of buffering against population fluctuations.
