The people in the hall at the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel were supposed to know the answers. Government officials, policy experts, business people and journalists, had come from all over the world to attend Chatham House's third London Conference on June 16-17. The conference was meant to push open doors, both physical ones and those in the mind: the focus was on how borders are being adapted, redefined and broken down. Held in the railway station which connects London, the most globalized city in the world, with Paris, it should have underlined how outdated borders had become. The world is getting more global and at the same time more local. Globalization has resulted in an evergrowing gap between leaders and people.
