• False mussels, Mytilopsis domingensis, were collected from seven stations in Laguna San Jose and four stations in Laguna Pinones, Puerto Rico, and heavy-metal concentrations were measured. The two ecosystems were considered to be contaminated and uncontaminated, respectively. Concentrations of arsenic, zinc, cadmium, lead, and copper were significantly higher in mussels from Laguna San Jose than in those from the reference location, while selenium concentrations were significantly higher in mussels from Laguna Pinones. Zinc was accumulated to the greatest extent, followed by Cu, Se, As, Pb, and Cd.
