Beschreibungen/Notizen
The mesopelagic species Astronesthes nigroides is found for the first time in the Pacific economic zone of Russia (40.57.5' N, 148.20' E). The very large specimen studied SL 223 mm (adult female) significantly differs from the earlier known juveniles and adolescents of this species SL 22-127 mm in the shorter chin barbel, larger number of teeth on the maxillary, smaller number of teeth on the palatine, and the different pattern of luminous tissue on the head. In the opinion of the authors, the very large individuals SL 244 and 255mm from southern Japan, identified by Yamamoto (1982) as Astronesthes sp.b, also belong to A. nigroides. It is hypothesized that many "average" and "small" species of the genus Astronesthes may reach much larger sizes than known at present.
