Dr Rahman Shiri suggested that the crude OR should attenuate after adjustment for waist circumference, low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, smoking, alcohol consumption and diabetes. According to this criterion, age was the confounder rather than the other variables examined in this study; unadjusted ORs increased markedly after adjustment for age.
