• The focus on forwarding national material prosperity evinced by the essentially practical South Kensington Museum, founded in the aftermath of the 1851 Great Exhibition, was praised by many Meiji intellectuals eager to promote the enrichment and modernization of Japan. Sano Tsunetami, a major player responsible for organizing Japan's participation in universal expositions (or world fairs), was one of the proponents openly advocating that Japan's first museum should follow the South Kensington model. This article seeks to examine the history of today's Tokyo National Museum and the Tainan Museum in Taiwan (now defunct) in order to trace the evolution of Japan's early museological development from trade-stimulating practicality to research-oriented scholarship.
