• Dennis studied medicine at the University of Cape Town Medical School, graduating in 1951, working first in Cape Town where he met a nurse at the Groote Schuur Hospital with strong interests in music and politics, Anne Winterstein. Dennis and his wife opposed the unilateral declaration of independence proclaimed by the government of Ian Smith in 1965 and this was noticed by the authorities: "The threat was that I would be restricted in the areas to which I could travel.
