  • The squat holds an unparalleled position of eminence in strength training and conditioning as well as in rehabilitation. This closed kinetic chain activity has become the standard care for patients with patellofemoral joint disorder, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) deficiency and ACL reconstructed knees. However, many believe that if the squat is used exclusively for quadriceps development, it can cause an imbalance between the vastus lateralis and the vastus medialis muscles. It is believed that varying the medial or lateral rotation of the feet during the squat can target specific muscles of the quadriceps to overcome any imbalance, although Ninos has stated that the literature in this area has proved inconclusive. Most research has focused on trained populations; however, Boyden et al. (2000) suggested that training status may influence muscle recruitment patterns in the quadriceps during the parallel squat at different degrees of foot rotation. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of foot rotation on EMG activity in the vastus medialis during a partial squat for an untrained population.
