  • The results of a two-year-long monitoring of the biooptical characteristics of phytoplankton in the western part of the Black Sea are presented. The high variability of the coefficients of light absorption by phytoplankton is related to both the changes in the pigment concentrations in the sea and the chl-specific light absorption coefficient. The dependences of a sub(ph)( lambda ) on the chlorophyll a concentration are established: a sub(ph)(440)=0.0413x super(0.628) (R super(2) = 0.63) for the blue maximum and a sub(ph)(678) = 0.0190x super(0.843) (r super(2) = 0.83) for the red one. The chl-specific light absorption coefficients decreased with the growth of the pigment concentrations in the sea. At a pigment content in the sea <1.0 mg/m super(3), a seasonal variability of the chl-specific absorption coefficient related to the changes in the intracellular pigment concentration was noted. The ratio of the absorption in the maximums decreased with the chlorophyll a increase (y = 2.14x- super(0.20), r super(2) = 0.41). Almost 95% of the variability of the mean value of the light absorption coefficient averaged over the spectrum is provided by the absorption in the blue maximum (y = 0.421x, r super(2) = 0.95).
