- The status of diagnoses of our rime within sociology is an ambivalent one. On the one hand, such diagnoses are the genre by which the discipline gets societal visibility. On the other hand, despite of their potential to stimulate further research, diagnoses of our time are classified as marginally acceptable. The article argues that the internal criticism focusses on just those characteristics of the genre which are necessary for attaining attention outside of the discipline. Therefore, diagnoses of our time can be defined as a hybrid form of sociological knowledge placed at the intersection of an internal and an external economy of attention. Hence, a dualism of two logics is constitutive for the production of this hybrid form of sociological knowledge. Adapted from the source document.
