• Catalogue to an exhibition of recent paintings by the German artist Antje Majewski (b.1968). There are three texts. Pakesch introduces Majewski's work, highlighting the resurgence of interest in figurative painting and the photographic basis of her art. Meschede examines the art historical resonances found in Majewski's portrait paintings, which range from Watteau to Manet, and offers an interpretation of her work as allegories of the art of painting. There is also an interview by Pakesch and Zürcher with Majewski, in which she discusses aspects of her career and work, including the transition from photography to painting, the establishment of relationships with her sitters and the observer, historical and contemporary influences, and the creation of selected paintings in the series Freunde und Liebende (1999; illus.), Liebende< /i> (2000; illus.), Spiel (2000; illus.), and Masken (2000-01; illus.).
